Review: Veuve Fourny et Fils Vertus Blanc de Blancs NV

Fourny et Fils is a Champagne house from Vertus, Champagne. It is a family run operation and has been since its founding in 1856. Today it is run by two brothers: Charles and Emmanuel Fourny, who took the reigns back in 1993.

The houses claim to fame is its location in chalk rich, Premier Cru territory. Their vineyard catalogue includes one very prestigious “Clos” – a walled vineyard – which has its own microclimate and is used in making their ultimate offering: “Clos Notre Dame”.

In terms of grapes, Fourny specialises in Chardonnay based wines and much of their range reflects this. Many of their own vines are more than 40 years old. A close relationship with their network of growers ensures the grape quality is upheld.

This entry level offering; a Blanc de Blancs no less – is typically made from the lowest yielding vines the house has access to – and in a surprise move – up to 20% of the blend is aged in Oak as opposed to stainless steel – which should give off some interesting flavour in the finished product.

Cost & Source: ~$55 a bottle from Cool Wine, Hobart, Tasmania.

Blend Ratio (%): Pinot Noir/Chardonnay/Pinot Meunier (0/100/0) with 6 g/l dosage.

Aging: At least 2.5 years

Disgorged: N/A

Sipped: November 2017

In the Glass:

Look: Pale golden hue of good clarity, with medium bubbles fair vigour.

Smell: A faint nose of yeast on a predominantly lemon and lime aroma.

Taste: This is a wine of multiple personalities depending on temperature.

Of course – this should be drunk chilled – this is when it is at its best: Zippy green apple and crisp tart lemon drive with a soft note of yeast mixed in – although restrained a little in terms of strength of flavour. As it warms it can become flat and vinegar like in expression.

Being a Blanc de Blancs – it lives up to being dry and quite mineral – with no searing acid or puckering tartness.

Plenty drinkable but there is a bit of a pulled punch in terms of strength of flavour – it feels a touch watered down.


Party Potential: Typically, Fourny Vertus is sold around $65 a bottle. A Case price presents decent value. I think that Fourny bought at in cases may make a nice little offering for guests that are a bit savvy in their wines. Its fairly conservative and non-polarising. Definitely worth bringing to a small dinner party for a try.

As a Gift: A nice offering for your fave Oenophile (Wine Buff) – even better if that’s you.

At Home: Probably a bit to expensive for home consumption without a reason.

Score & Verdict:


A nice product of a family upbringing. Not too heavy in personality and refreshing company – especially over a meal.

At $55 I feel it is decent value for the quality.
