One of the better known champagne houses, G.H.Mumm is the 4th largest by volume with over 8 million bottles produced annually. Mumm has become well established in the public eye, sponsoring events such as the Melbourne Cup and (for a while) being the victory spray of choice in Formula 1. As part of the Pernod Ricard group, G.H Mumm sits as a sister brand to Perrier Jouet.
Mumm’s famous “Cordon Rouge” branding means “red ribbon”, a homage to the history of the house when it once emblazoned its bottles sent to its best clients with red silk ribbons. Speaking of history, Mumm’s roots are very Germanic, originating from German winemaker P.A. Mumm. After acquiring land in Champagne, they set about developing their sparkling wines under the watch of Georges Hermann Mumm, from whom the modern name is now derived.
The Chef de Cave (chief winemaker) torch at Mumm has recently been passed onto young Didier Mariotti, a man with a reputation as a stickler for quality. He applies this approach right through the wine making process from growing to distribution, personally travelling to international markets to check on warehouse stocks.
Mumm’s Rosé is one of the house’s most well-known and best-selling varietals. Blended out of grapes from 77 cru’s (vineyard regions), it uses about 12 to 14% red wine (Pinot Noir) to give it that rich, red tinge. The use of reds typically make these types of champagnes a touch bitey and peppery on the finish of the sip.

In the Glass:
Look: A strong salmon red tint with nice streams of medium sized bubbles.
Smell: Fresh, sweet fruit nose with strawberries and cherries mixed in with large citrus fruit.
Taste: The first sip is a great introduction of soft citrus and fresh berries, such as strawberry and cranberry, in an equal and balanced measure.
There is very good acid balance here too, with a sweet and sugary finish present that feels greater than the 6g/l quoted by the house – though it doesn’t serve a detriment to the taste buds although it does stall efforts to become overly “brut” (dry).
The finish has that nice red wine pinot noir bite to it – which is held back from full strength. It does get a little rough on the middle of the tongue where the fruit flavours get quashed, but the sweet sensation of the sugar masks this somewhat.
Overall a pleasant drink that the party enjoyed.
Party Potential: When Mumm rose goes on sale (<$50) it’s not a bad little addition to the champagne bowl for variety at parties. As a BYO, it is a nice bring along for lunch with friends in the sun (keep it chilled, however).
As a Gift: Similar to the NV Brut, Mumm’s value lies within its brand – it’s a very well-known and popular champagne, with ease of gifting. This one represents a better quality gift than the NV though.
At Home: Mumm is a nice little bottle to pop on the table at an intimate family gathering to celebrate an award or birthday.
Matching: Mumm Rosé was a nice match with a seasoned steak and salad over lunch, where the Pinot lends itself to red meat (but not overly so).
Score & Verdict:
The red headed sibling of the one that everyone knows – but not as popular. But not being the families centre of attention works well for them; they are the more pleasant to acquaint yourself with. Show them off to your friends and watch them dote a bit.
At $70 I feel it is reasonable value for the quality (watch for sales).
